From Bogart to BINGO: A History of the Avoca Legion Hall
Please join us on Saturday, March 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 112 N Elm Street in Avoca, Iowa. The Avoca Main Street Design Committee will be collecting your memories from the Harris Theater & the Avoca Legion Hall for an oral history project during the Legion Hall’s Open House.
Members of the Design Committee will have recording devices for audio and video, and will record your memories of the building at 112 N Elm Street; whether it was seeing your first movie, working as an usher, dancing at the indoor beach party when the floors were leveled, your graduation party, your wedding reception, playing BINGO each week, meeting with your fellow Legion members, or WHATEVER made this space special for you. Our hope is that we preserve these memories as the location prepares to undergo restoration and renovation as it transitions to the Avoca Veterans Community Center.
The Sweet Vale of Avoca Museum will provide a display of artifacts from the building’s history.
The Avoca Legion Fred Funston Post 227 plans to have the building open for all who want to revisit before it is closed for construction. It will open at 10 a.m. on March 22 and close when the bar is cleared out. Refreshments will be available.
