Thanks for the Memories!

On Saturday, March 22, 2025, Avocans gathered for a heartfelt celebration at the Fred Funston Post 227 Legion Hall, marking a bittersweet farewell to this historic building before it undergoes renovations and is transformed into the Avoca Veterans Community Center. The event was a fitting tribute to the space that has served as a cornerstone of our community for decades.

As part of the celebration, the Avoca Main Street Design Committee launched an oral history project, capturing the memories and stories of those who have been part of the Fred Funston Post 227 Legion Hall’s legacy. Edited by Marne Elk Horn, the project offers a glimpse into the building's significance, preserving the voices of those who have gathered there over the years.

The stories shared during the event reflect how this space has been more than just a building; it has been a gathering place, a source of pride, and a home for the community of Avoca. From a first moviegoing experience, to hosting local events and celebrations, to being the weekly regional BINGO gathering, the Fred Funston Post 227 Legion Hall has truly been a center of camaraderie and connection for both past and present residents.

One of the most notable themes that emerged from the oral history project was the deep appreciation for the community created and nurtured by the Fred Funston Post 227 Legionnaires. Their dedication to the veterans and their families has left an indelible mark on Avoca, and the bonds formed within these walls have had a lasting impact on the town's spirit.

As we look forward to the transformation of the building into the Avoca Veterans Community Center, we honor the memories and the history that the Fred Funston Post 227 Legion Hall has provided for all of Avoca. This next chapter promises to continue the tradition of service, support, and community that has defined this space for so long.

We are excited for the future, while also holding on to the cherished past, and we extend our thanks to all who have been part of the Fred Funston Post 227 Legion Hall’s remarkable history.
